In this guide, I will show you how to hide columns in an Excel spreadsheet by making its content invisible without deleting it. And I will explain how to do it not only on the MacOS but also in Excel Online (the free Web version) and the Excel app for smartphones and tablets.

How to hide columns in Excel on MacOS

To hide columns in Excel with Microsoft Office (2007-2019) you can use two methods.

First method: Hide Columns function

  1. Go to the Launchpad of the MacOS and click twice on the Excel icon to open it.
  2. Click twice on the spreadsheet you want to open.
  3. Select the column you want to make invisible. To do it, click on the letter located at the top of the column you want to hide. In this way, you will select the column. For example, to select the second column, click on B. If you want to hide multiple columns at the same time, press Ctrl on the keyboard while clicking on the other letters.
  4. Click Home at the top, on the toolbar, and then click Format.
  5. From the menu that opens, select Hide & Unhide and then Hide columns. The column or the columns will be hidden, but the content will not be deleted.

Second method: Right-click

  1. Go to the Launchpad of the MacOS and click twice on the Excel icon to open it.
  2. Click twice on the spreadsheet you want to open.
  3. Select the column you want to make invisible. To do it, click on the letter located at the top of the column you want to hide. In this way, you will select the column. For example, to select the second column, click on B. If you want to hide multiple columns at the same time, press Ctrl on the keyboard while clicking on the other letters.
  4. Right-click and select Hide Columns.

Make columns visible in Excel

To make columns visible in Excel follow the following steps:

  1. Select the column before and the next column of the hidden column.
  2. Click Home and then Format at the top, on the toolbar. Or right-click.
  3. Select Unhide Columns.

How to hide columns in Excel Online

If you do not have Excel installed on your computer, you can use Excel Online directly from your browser.

To use Excel Online, you need a Microsoft account. Therefore, if you don’t yet have one, you can follow my specific guide on how to create a Microsoft account.
In addition, the Excel file you want to edit has to be stored into OneDrive, the Microsoft cloud storage service. If it’s not already uploaded in OneDrive, then log in to your OneDrive and drag the XLSX / XLS file into the browser window.

Then, follow the steps below:

  1. Access to Excel Online by entering the email and password you used to create your Microsoft account.
  2. Then open the spreadsheet by double-clicking on the file.
  3. Click on the letter related to the column you want to hide.
  4. Click Format at the top right, on the Home section of the toolbar, and select Hide & Unhide.
  5. Then select Hide columns from the menu that opens. Now the column will no longer be visible, but the data is still in the hidden column.

Alternatively, after selecting the column or the columns you want to hide, right-click and click on Hide Columns.

If you change your mind and you want to show the hidden column again, select the before column and the next column of the hidden column. Then right-click and choose Unhide Columns.

How to hide columns in the Excel App

Excel is also available as an application for mobile devices. It’s available for Android, iOS and Windows 10 Mobile and can be used for free if you have a device of 10.1 ” or less, otherwise, you need to subscribe to Office 365)

To hide a column in a spreadsheet using the official Excel app, follow the following steps:

  1. If you’ve not already done, download the app from the Play Store, App Store or Microsoft Store. It depends on your device.
  2. Open the app and tap on the file you want to edit to open it.
  3. Tap the letter related to the column you want to hide.
  4. From the menu that opens, swipe right until the Hide item.
  5. Select Hide and the column will not be visible anymore.

If you want to show the hidden column again, tap the letter on the column next to it and from the menu that appears select Unhide.
